The first lighthouse built to guard the Lake Michigan waters of Milwaukee Bay at North Point was erected in 1837. It was replaced by the present structure in 1855 along with a beautiful old house next to it. That lighthouse was expanded in 1912 because it was not high enough for all boats and ships to see. Note the ridge bolts halfway up the tower. That was the original height of the old tower. In the mid 1990's there was a political move to relocate the lighthouse from the northern tip of the city's Lake Park area to Milwaukee's downtown harbor front. The bill was denied because of historic foundation and media desires to keep it where it was originally built. It is now one of Lake Park's biggest attractions.
